Details:

In this haunting and explosive debut, Meredith Miller explores the truth behind three girls on the cusp of adulthood, and all the shocking realizations that come under the guise of growing up. Perfect for fans of I’ll Give You the Sun and Girl in Pieces. Ruth, Magda, and Isabel are different from everyone else. They can see beneath the seemingly perfect, cookie-cutter exterior of their small town of Highbone, Long Island. They know that below the surface, each house is filled with secrets, indifference, and violence. These girls refuse to become willing participants of these fake lives. Instead, they are determined to fight every condescending comment, every unwelcome touch, and every lie they’ve been told. When the opportunity to commit the perfect crime appears, the girls finally start to see their way out of Highbone. But for the first time, Ruth, Magda, and Isabel are keeping secrets from each other. As they drift apart, the weight of reality starts to set in. These girls can’t save each other. They might not even be able to save themselves. “Darkly atmospheric and brutally honest, Little Wrecks depicts girls becoming women in a society that devalues both.”—Mindy McGinnis, author of Female of the Species From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Ruth, Magda, and Isabel are best friends, connected by their dislike of living in Highbone, a small coastal town in Long Island, NY. The girls have relationships with boys in town but long to leave their empty lives behind. They eventually hatch a plot to steal marijuana from a local dealer. They hope to use the profits to make their grand escape, but things are not quite as easy as they initially appear. The seemingly perfect crime begins to drive a wedge among Ruth, Magda, and Isabel that they may not be able to repair. Debut novelist Miller has crafted a fairly successful, dynamic coming-of-age tale about growing up in a small town. However, the narrative suffers from a lack of momentum throughout. It is also fairly easy to confuse the three protagonists—especially in the first half of the story. The author uses colorful metaphors to help readers visualize the characters' dissatisfaction and angst. While the comparisons are beautifully descriptive, they keep the story from moving forward. VERDICT A supplemental purchase for libraries looking for additional coming-of-age titles with multiple female protagonists.—Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA

Ruth, Magda, and Isabel are on the precipice of something. They might finally escape their small town of Highbone, Long Island. They might finally be seen for who they really are—not just young, pretty things up for the taking. Or they might just set Highbone and all its lying, numb residents on fire. Each girl reaches a breaking point—one last unwelcome touch, one last blind eye turned, one last lie told. It sparks a fire within each of them. But what incites a fury of violence and vengeance might also tear these three friends apart. These girls can’t save each other. They might not even be able to save themselves.
