Details: Product Description Many Moons explores every phase of the moon through beautiful illustrations, and compares each phase to a different shape, such as a waxing moon and a banana! Many Moons shows young children the different phases of the moon, from the new moon to a waning crescent, with a variety of beautiful, bright illustrations. Each spread features a specific phase of the moon, and compares it to different shapes, such as a cat's tail, a banana, or a brilliant smile. The night sky is vast and beautiful, and to many children, a mysterious thing full of wonder. Why not nurture this sense of early curiosity? Many Moons introduces children to basic astronomy. Understanding the moon is a jumping off point to learning about the stars, space, the ocean tides, and so much more. From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—This French import takes readers through all the phases of the moon by comparing its changing shape to common things using the phrase on this night. The book begins, "On this night, Matthew thinks the moon could be a bow for his arrow." As the lunar cycle continues, the moon is compared to, among other things, a banana, a smile, half a wheel of cheese, an egg, and a rowboat. Each spread features illustrations on the right-hand side, which cleverly reinforce the text on the left. The contrast between the black background and the white text, bright yellow moon, and the black or white (depending on placement) etchinglike drawings are minimal and eye-catching. A hint of the full circle of the moon is visible throughout, subtly shown in glossy black on the matte background. The last pages feature a simply illustrated explanation of how and why the moon changes shape. The title has sturdy, board book—like pages and is constructed to lie flat. VERDICT This solid introductory glimpse at the phases of the moon can be read on many different levels. Also works well as a book on shapes or a read-aloud.—Catherine Callegari, Reston Regional Library, VA Review 'The endless fascination of the moon as it waxes and wanes is richly displayed in this gorgeously tactile picture book.'― The Guardian 'Introduces young children to basic astronomy, and is sure to instil a sense of curiosity about the world and the universe.'― The Guardian Best Books Guide 2017 'An attractive homage to Luna and an insight into the way that the moon maintains a presence in our lives, even when it appears to be absent.'― Book Trust About the Author Remi Courgeon is an illustrator based in France.
