The teens have been training and learning about their supernatural powers, including flight and healing, while their families think they're at camp. After the summer is over, they are supposed to avoid contact with each other so they won't be noticed by Overdrake, the mysterious dragon lord. When they are attacked on Halloween, Tori discovers the identity of the traitor within the group and she has to fight to defeat Overdrake and protect the other Slayers from dragon attacks. Tori's conflicted feelings for Jesse, her former boyfriend, and Dirk, one of the Slayers, add to the plot, as do Tori's conflicts between her Slayer ability and her newly discovered ability to hear dragons. Hill has created a variety of action and fighting sequences, including one with Tori flying around the Washington Mall. The mix of fantasy, dragons, superpowers, and romantic drama will have wide appeal to many readers in spite of being somewhat formulaic.—Beth L. Meister, Milwaukee Jewish Day School, WI From Booklist The apt title of this episode in the Slayers series (beginning with Slayers, 2011) plays out in a taut plotline that takes the eponymous teenage dragon slayers on a rescue mission that turns lethal, thanks to the traitorous dragonlord in their midst. That dragonlord, however, has inherited his identity rather than choosing it freely, and he uses his own inside information to complicate his father’s politically charged plans for taking down the U.S. government. The romantic triangle among Dirk, Jesse, and Tori, laid out in the first volume, continues to develop in complexity as alliances shift and the trio discovers the inherent difficulties of communication and dealing with their emotions. Hill is up to her usual literary, witty writing and superb world building, and she has managed to bridge an excellent passage between the two volumes. New readers will get enough background, but it’s not repetitive enough to turn off seasoned fans. A stellar fantasy for politically astute readers. Grades 7-10. --Francisca Goldsmith
